Here’s a second look at a horary chart I posted in 2018 (here), asking whether Brett Kavanaugh would be appointed to the US Supreme Court before Nov 6 (the date of the mid-term elections that year). I had judged he would not; but in fact, Mr. Kavanaugh was appointed to the Court on Oct 6, 2018.
Shortly thereafter I asked some colleagues for a second opinion on the chart. (Shout-outs to Goritsa and Molly for their helpful feedback!) My mistake was the choice of house to signify Mr. Kavanaugh.
I took Mr. Kavanaugh to be Lord 7, “some other person" (see chart below). But in the context of this question, what matters is that Mr. Kavanaugh is a judge. As a judge, he is Lord 9, the Moon. And look where the action is happening: the Moon (26.29 Capricorn) has just perfected a trine to Mercury (25.30 Virgo) and is about to trine the Sun (26.41 Virgo). This tells us the Moon is important and confirms the house choice. In contrast, Lord 7 (Venus) sits in the 12th house doing nothing much.
I had understood the court appointment to be Lord 10, Mercury (as the job in question). But it makes more sense to see Lord 10 as the President, the person with the power to nominate judges to the Court. Mercury is conjunct the Sun and has power over it by sign. I see this as testimony that the Sun signifies the Supreme Court itself. If so, then we have a clear interpretation of the aspects in play: the Moon’s past trine with Mercury shows Mr. Trump nominating Mr. Kavanaugh. The Moon then goes immediately to trine the Sun: Kavanaugh joins the Court.
Some have argued that the Sun signifies the Supreme Court because Leo, ruled by the Sun, is the next sign over in the ninth house. Maybe so, but I’m unsure about the logic of using the next sign over in this way while the ninth is already in use. I’m content to understand the Sun as the Supreme Court for the reason argued above. It is also fitting that the Sun, generally, signifies the greatest of things in any category (e.g., Kings for rulers, gold for metals, etc.) We don’t typically use natural rulerships in horary, but I think it works here as supportive testimony.
